Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an annual plant in the family Fabaceae, with leaves consisting of three small obovate to oblong leaflets. It is cultivated worldwide as a semiarid crop. Its seeds and leaves are common ingredients in dishes from the Indian subcontinent, where it is known as 'Methi'.

Fenugreek is an erect, smooth, herbaceous plant that can grow up to a height of 40-80 cm. Its stems are erect, up to 50 cm high, sometimes branched. The leaves are alternate, compound, trifoliolate, 7-12 cm long, light green in colour. The leaflets are oval, up to 5 cm long, hairy on their lower face.

The fruits occur as straight or sickle-like pods of 2-10 cm, long, thin and pointed, and contain 10-20 seeds. The seeds are 6-8 mm long, oblong or square, green-olive or brownish in colour, with a very strong and spicy odour

Fenugreek seeds are edible and used as condiments. They yield an oil that is used to flavour butterscotch, cheese, licorice, pickles, rum, syrup and vanilla. The oil is used in perfume and cosmetic industries. The seeds are used as flavouring agents for maple syrup, cheese and curries. They contain diospenin, a drug used in the synthesis of hormones. Seed husks are a source of mucilage, oil, sapogenin and protein. Plant residues or whole plants may be used as green manure and fuel

Fenugreek Seeds uses include as a treatment of weakness and leg edema, as a lactation and appetite stimulant, and as a remedy for indigestion, baldness, and fever. Some have used it topically for myalgia, wound treatment, and cellulitis. One potential benefit of fenugreek is improving elevated blood glucose and lipid levels associated with chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity.
